The magical universe of Harry Potter features tons of powerful spells that can be both offensive and defensive. Hogwarts Legacy also has many useful spells that can help you discover secrets across the school and the world. That is why we will make a tier list for all the spells in Hogwarts Legacy.
Before we begin, I would like to state that you should try out all the spells and see for yourself which ones are worth it. Plus, using all of them is quite fun, especially during your first playthrough. With that said, let’s dive right in and check out the tier list for all spells in Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy Spells Tier List (2023)
After using all of the spells in the game, we have made this tier list so that you can know which spells are worth using. Keep in mind that some spells exist solely for certain purposes and cannot be used in combat. That doesn’t mean that the spell is bad, instead, we will see if players can truly benefit from using it.
- S-Tier: These spells are the best in the game and you will mostly rely on them until you finish Hogwarts Legacy.
- A-Tier: While they aren’t as good as the S-Tier spells, they can still pack a punch and help you out on more than one occasion.
- B-Tier: The spells in this tier are just there to exist in the game. Even if you do not regularly use them, you will have an easy time.
- C-Tier: Apart from some of the instances where you have to use these spells to progress the game, you do not need them in your arsenal.
- F-Tier: These spells are there only to use in the Room of Requirement or for getting certain materials. It is not worth having them equipped ever in the game.

S-Tier
This tier contains spells like Ancient Magic, Imperio, Petrificus Totalus, and Protego just to name a few. These spells are extremely useful and you will have them equipped for the entire game.
Ancient Magic
During combat, you will slowly fill out your Ancient Magic Meter. Once at least one bar of it is full, you can cast devastating Ancient Magic attacks that deal massive damage and break Shield Charms. This is one of the most useful spells that you will use during the entire game.
Ancient Magic Throw
You can use Ancient Magic to throw special environmental objects at the targeted enemy. While it deals a good chunk of damage, the main purpose is to break through Shield Charms. It is a solid spell that can help you finish off enemies quickly without having to prolong the fight.
Imperio
Imperio is an Unforgivable Curse that is quite useful. You can use it to control an enemy as if they were your companion. Plus, they take reduced damage from other enemies to prolong their allegiance to you. It also curses the victim – and cursed enemies take extra damage.
Petrificus Totalus
During combat, you can use this spell to bind enemies permanently. This allows you to freely attack them and deplete their HP. However, stronger enemies will only be bound for a short duration but will take additional damage from the spell.
Protego
While having a good offense is crucial, having a solid defense is also vital. This spell protects against a variety of attacks, including spell casts, weapon strikes, and more. If you wait for the optimal moment before casting this spell, you will use the Perfect Protego that damages melee attackers and reflects projectiles back.
Transformation
Using this spell will transform objects and enemies into alternate forms. Doing so will take them out of combat for a long time. Plus, you can even throw certain objects at them during this state to dish out tons of explosive damage.
Avada Kedavra
Avada Kedavra is another Unforgivable Curse that you can learn by following a long side quest. It requires a lot of effort but it is worth it. You can use it to instantly kill any enemy it hits. If you are going for the Dark Arts Talent build, this spell is a must-have.
A-Tier
This tier contains spells like Stupefy, Revelio, Bombarda, Glacius, and Levioso. They still pack a punch and help you out on more than one occasion.
Stupefy
This spell stuns enemies, making them easy targets for follow-up spells. While it doesn’t deal direct damage itself, stunned enemies take extra damage. It also breaks enemy Shield Charms which is always a great thing.
Revelio
It highlights a variety of useful and interactive targets in the world, including hidden objects, puzzle items, loot, enemies, and more. Revelio will help you locate secrets across Hogwarts and complete certain puzzles as well.
Bombarda
Bombarda deals heavy damage on impact, accompanied by an explosion that can destroy heavy objects and hit surrounding enemies.
Glacius
You can use Glacius to freeze enemies, increasing the damage they take from follow-up attacks. This is great to start your combo with since enemies will be prone to take additional damage from all other attacks that you do.
Levioso
This allows you to levitate objects and enemies. While it isn’t the best, you can use it to surprise enemies and catch them off guard. Plus, it also gives you a bit of an opening to either recover HP or use more spells.
Diffindo
Use Diffindo to slash objects and enemies from afar dealing considerable damage. The reason why it isn’t S-Tier is that its cooldown is quite long which can leave you open to damage.
Expelliarmus
This allows you to disarm wands and weapons from most enemies who wield them. On top of that, it also deals damage to all enemies, even if they do not carry a weapon.
B-Tier
This tier contains spells Disillusionment, Levioso, Crucio, Accio, and Incendio. Even if you do not regularly use them, you will have an easy time.
Disillusionment
It causes you to blend into your surroundings, making it difficult for others to perceive you. While this is a great thing, the stealth mechanics in Hogwarts Legacy aren’t the best. However, you can use this to bypass certain areas where you are having issues with enemies.
Levioso
You can use it to levitate objects and enemies, leaving them unable to do anything. Plus, if you upgrade the talent for it, you can levitate multiple enemies. However, this is only useful if you do not hit the levitated target or they will drop down.
Crucio
Moving on to another Unforgivable Curse, Crucio causes most enemies to writhe in pain as they take damage over time. It also curses the victim – and cursed enemies take extra damage.
Accio
Use Accio to summon a variety of objects and enemies to close range. When a summoned object reaches you, you will automatically cast Wingardium Leviosa to continue levitating and controlling it without the need for additional button inputs.
Incendio
Incendio deals significant damage and lights certain objects on fire, but its range is short and requires you to be close to the target. While it is great, the short range can leave you vulnerable to random attacks from the enemy.
Depulso
This spell repels many types of objects and enemies with considerable force. You can use it to make room for a quick breather if the enemy is getting too close for comfort. If you use it in certain locations, you can make the enemies fall off large areas like a cliff, causing them to instantly die.
Confringo
Confringo is a long-range bolt that deals damage on impact and set enemies on fire. Use it on a single target to deal a good amount of damage. However, it isn’t the best when you are attacked by multiple foes.
C-Tier
This tier contains spells like Descendo, Basic Cast, and Arresto Momentum. Apart from some of the instances where you have to use these spells to progress the game, you do not need them in your arsenal.
Descendo
Use this spell to slam levitating enemies on the ground. All targets that are slammed to the ground will suffer considerable impact damage. Airborne enemies will take even greater damage upon hitting the ground.
Basic Cast
As the name suggests, this is a basic attack from your wand. Use it to deal minor damage to enemies and objects.
Arresto Momentum
If you want to slow objects and enemies, this is the spell for you. It gives you additional time to plan your next move without having to panic.
F-Tier
Finally, this tier contains spells like Lumos, Alohomora, Evanesco, and Wingardium Leviosa. It is not worth having them equipped ever in the game.
Lumos
This spell lights up your wand and allows you to see better in darker areas of the game. Plus, you can use it to solve puzzles that require extra light. While useful, this spell isn’t used apart from very specific sections of the game.
Alohomora
Alohomora is used to unlock doors and containers all across the game. Just like Lumos, it isn’t useful apart from a few specific moments.
Evanesco
You can use this to vanish items and get some moonstone when cast within the Room of Requirement.
Wingardium Leviosa
Wingardium Leviosa is a popular spell that is beloved by Harry Potter fans. While it is a great spell, Accio does a better job and is quicker as well.
Reparo
As its name suggests, this spell allows you to quickly return certain damaged objects to their former states. Only use this to progress some quests since it won’t be useful in any other situation.
Nab-Sack
Nab-Sac is a charmed bag that can be used to rescue and hold beasts. It is extremely situational so only equip it when necessary.
Beast Petting Brush
This is a brush that can be used to groom beasts. Again, it is dependent on the situation and will not be used in any other part of the game.
Beast Feed
Like other Beast spells, use this to feed beasts and earn money.
Conjuring Spell
This allows you to conjure items into existence when cast within the Room of Requirement.
Altering Spell
While in the Room of Requirement, use this to alter the physical forms and features of items.
Conclusion
Those are all the spells in Hogwarts Legacy listed down in a tier list format. While I suggest that you use everything the game offers and find out for yourself which spell is worth it, some of them just aren’t worth using at all.
